Woodworking materials include solid wood, plywood and other engineered panels. The best choice depends on appearance, stability, edge treatment, cost and exposure. Use the selector below as a practical starting point.
Solid Wood
Solid wood offers natural grain, repairability and attractive edges, but it expands and contracts across the grain as moisture changes. Design joinery and panels to accommodate movement.
Plywood
Plywood is stable, strong for its thickness and efficient for cabinets, built-ins and large panels. Visible edges usually need edge banding, solid edging or an intentional exposed-ply design.
MDF and Other Engineered Panels
MDF has a flat, uniform surface that works well under paint and for templates. It is heavy and its edges need appropriate treatment. Other engineered panels vary widely in strength, moisture resistance and intended use.
